Lillygols Presentation

I thought that Lilygol was a really interesting person when we saw her at the Asian film Festival. Then when I heard that she was going to be here I was really excited. During her presentation there were two things that really stood out to me. The fact that the media there is censored and the fact that the people protesting all use face book and twitter to spread the word of the revolution.

To me what makes America great is that we don't sensor the media ever. CNN or FOX can put what ever they want on TV. In Iran, the government doesn't allow anything on the airways that they don't approve of. That is so strange to me. I have always grown up where we could say anything and the press could print anything that it wanted. Now to be hearng about a place where you can get arrested by the thought police for having an opinion contrary to that of the government, it really scares me . Not because I am scared that this might happen to me but I am scared for all the people who have to endure this terrible treatment.

Secondly I was shocked about the people who support change using social networking sites like Twitter, Myspace and Facebook to spread their ideas, and ask for help. I have a Facebook and Twitter account. I would have never known that opressed people in the middle east were using the site to keep their ideas alive. It had never occured to me that the sites were anything but a way to occupie myself and talk to my friends. Finaly, throughing back to my last paragraph, I am amazed that the government in Iran have blocked these site. All in all I am amazed an appualed that any government anywhere would do this.
